Emily Brontë naceu en Thornton, Yorkshire, en 1818. En 1820, a súa familia mudouse a Haworth onde o seu pai exerceu de párroco anglicano. En 1824, Emily e as súas irmás estiveron internas no colexio Clergy Daughters, en Lancashire, cuxas pésimas condicións serviron de inspiración a Charlotte para a súa novela Jane Eyre. En 1838 traballou como institutriz en Halifax e logo estivo como alumna nun colexio de Bruxelas coa súa irmá Charlotte. No ano 1846 publicouse un tomo de poemas das tres irmás Brontë, malia o escaso éxito do libro, deciden publicar ao ano seguinte cadansúa novela, que hoxe forman parte sobranceira da literatura inglesa, cos mesmos pseudónimos masculinos que utilizaron na súa primeira obra: ?Wuthering Heights? de Ellis Bell, ?Agnes Grey? de Acton Bell e ?Jane Eyre? de Currer Bell.Trala morte do seu irmán Branwell en 1848, Emily morre tuberculosa poucos meses despois. A mesma doenza que levará ás súas irmás Anne, ao ano seguinte, e Charlotte, en 1855.
