Stefan Zweig nació en Viena en 1881, en el seno de una familia de la gran burguesía judía. Con apenas 20 años comenzó a colaborar en el diario más importante de Viena, el Neue Freie Presse. Tradujo a Baudelaire y a Verlaine. Trabó gran amistad con el poeta belga Émile Verhaeren y con el escritor francés Romain Rolland, que serían sus referentes literarios y morales. La catástrofe que supuso para Europa la Primera Guerra Mundial afianzó sus convicciones pacifistas y antinacionalistas. Luchó por divulgar la idea de una Europa sin fronteras, unida por sus raíces culturales y humanistas.
