Entre la République de Platon et les grandes oeuvres de la philosophie politique moderne, on oublie parfois la Politique d'Aristote, qui paraît dater : Aristote est favorable à l'esclavage, sexiste, méprise le travail manuel, et ne reconnaît comme Etat que la cité grecque. De plus, il ne se laisse pas aisément récupérer par la pensée contemporaine, n'étant ni démocrate, ni libéral, ni égalitariste. Pourtant, quand il s'agit de distinguer entre les régimes, de comprendre la nature de chacun et les conditions de leur stabilité à tous, d'indiquer la voie du compromis entre les groupes sociaux, ou encore, dans ses rapports avec l'économie ou avec la morale, de définir et louer la politique en termes de justice, d'amitié, d'intérêt commun ou d'épanouissement humain, on ne peut se passer d'Aristote. La difficulté même qu'on éprouve à résumer sa position, faite de tensions et de nuances, est signe de la richesse du propos, à la fois plus réaliste que le propos platonicien, et cependant comme lui soucieux d'identifier le régime le meilleur.
