Se reúnen en este volumen tres ensayos sobre la obra de Borges escritos en el transcurso de una década por el filósofo y escritor italiano Vincenzo Vitiello. Tres miradas sobre un puñado escogido de poemas y contes philosophiques (Funes el memorioso, El otro, Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote, El inmortal.) en los que se analiza cómo Borges, «el último alejandrino», resuelve en ficciones de rara liviandad el peso asfixiante de la cultura occidental. Como afirma el propio autor: "Demasiado 'literato' para aceptar la estudiada y falsa inmediatez rústica de los fingidos hijos de la Tierra; demasiado 'filósofo' para hacerse ilusiones sobre la 'realidad' de las Formas y sobre las fábulas de sus 'amigos', a Borges no le queda sino aceptar el destino del hombre post-platónico [.]. Esto explica el intento de Borges de relacionarse con el mundo sin salir del libro, de buscar la realidad, la verdadera, no la aparente, en la palabra".
