El poema filosófico "De rerum natura", escrito hacia el año 50 a.C. por un romano llamado Tito Lucrecio Caro, es al mismo tiempo una de las obras más grandes de la antigüedad clásica y una de las más extrañas. Su grandeza poética parece haber sido reconocida de modo casi inmediato. El poeta Ovidio proclamó que «los versos del sublime Lucrecio» perdurarían mientras lo hiciese el mundo. Cicerón escribió que el poema era «no sólo rico en brillante ingenio, sino artísticamente elevado». Y Virgilio, aludiendo a Lucrecio en las "Geórgicas", rindió cálido homenaje a un hombre que «consiguió hallar las causas de las cosas y que ha pisoteado todos los temores».
