Enrique Cornelio Agrippa (1486-1535), consciente de la crisis cultural y religiosa contemporáneas, publica en 1530 su obra Declamación sobre la incertidumbre y vanidad de las ciencias para denunciar la corrupción generalizada de las ciencias y las artes. Concibiendo, así, un proyecto general de regeneración cultural y religiosa, su libro De vanitate scientiarum, representa la parte negativa, crítica y destructiva del proyecto: tiene que desmontar todo el entramado científico del momento porque, basado como está en la ratio, es erróneo y moralmente nocivo. La parte positiva de dicho proyecto estará luego representada por su libro De occulta philosophia (1531-1533) con el que pretende reconstruir su ideal de saber basado en la religión y rehabilitar la magia como instrumento de conocimiento.
