From what vantage point do we view life? A forty-year-old woman contemplates her detachment from the visitor room in the hospital where her mother is a patient. She is a spectator in life, perhaps by her own choice or by her own acceptance of the circumstances she allowed to be imposed on her. Her husband and her best friend, to the contrary, are the type of people who face any challenge without giving up one ounce of participation in their own lives.

It's this contrast, among others, that brings her to a realization of her own doubts, regrets, contradictions and failures. This novel shows what is necessary to come to terms with who you are, with life as it is, and with the desire to live life on its own terms.
