No obstante, las experiencias vividas servirían de sustrato literario para sus historias más impresionantes. Encender una hoguera (1908), Amor a la vida (1907), Bâtard (1902) y Ley de vida (1901), son cuatro clásicos de la novela corta americana, en la línea del mejor London.
