"De genere dicendi philosophorum" está compuesto por tres cartas de extensión desigual, reescritas y corregidas entre 1484 y 1491. Fueron dirigidas a Lorenzo de Médicis (1484) y a los humanistas Hermolao Barbaro (1485) y Filippo Beroaldo (1491), y son consideradas por el propio autor como un tratado sobre el género de expresión de los filósofos. En ellas aborda la relación entre filosofía, poesía y retórica, conjugando en su argumentación las especulaciones de Platón y Aristóteles con los versos de Dante y Petrarca, y los artificios estilísticos de Cicerón y Quintiliano.
