Hasta mediados del siglo XIX se sabía muy poco de las estrellas. ¿Por qué diferían en brillo o en color? ¿A qué distancia estaban? Y, sobre todo, ¿de qué estaban hechas? Henrietta Leavitt encontró un método de hallar la distancia a las estrellas, por lejanas que estuviesen. Así se descubrió -en 1924- que había galaxias exteriores a la nuestra, y poco después se supo que el universo estaba en expansión (1929). Escudriñando la luz que nos llega de las estrellas también se pudo averiguar su composición. Al mismo tiempo se iban conociendo sus procesos internos: cómo nacían y evolucionaban. Las de mayor masa se convertían en supernovas y producían agujeros negros.
