En la sociedad en la que vivió el filósofo y político J. S. Mill, la noción de lo útil, en el lenguaje cotidiano, se oponía a lo placentero. También la mayoría de los escritores y periodistas la aplicaban en forma despectiva frente a todo lo bello, placentero y agradable, desconociendo la tradición de otros pensadores, desde Epicuro a Bentham, que sostenían lo contrario. En realidad, la teoría del utilitarismo es la idea de la utilidad o del principio de la mayor felicidad como base para la moral que parte del siguiente postulado: una acción es moralmente buena si fomenta la felicidad y mala, si la impide. John Stuart Mill nació en 1806 en Londres y murió en Avignon en 1873. Vivió en plena era victoriana, frente a cuya rigidez mantuvo una actitud crítica, como puede apreciarse en El utilitarismo y en Sobre la libertad, también publicado en esta colección.
