En 1778, el rey de Prusia Federico II el Grande auspició un concurso de disertaciones filosóficas con el fin de dilucidar si era útil para el pueblo ser engañado, bien induciéndole a nuevos errores, bien manteniéndolo en los que ya estaba. La disertación escrita por el marqués de Condorcet (1743-1794) para ese concurso, titulada "¿Es útil para los hombres ser engañados?", aborda la llamada "noble mentira", que tanto Platón, como, más aún, Maquiavelo auspiciaron, es decir, el supuesto derecho del gobernante a mentir al pueblo en bien de este. El filósofo francés sopesa igualmente en su texto la importancia del conocimiento como herramienta de dominio, así como la viabilidad de un sistema moral y social que tenga entre sus principios la mendacidad y la mala fe del político.
