Ogai Mori (1862-1922). Escriptor i metge militar, fou una de les figures més importants de la literatura japonesa de l’era Meiji (1868-1912). Com a autor, va escriure nombrosos contes i novel·les, entre els quals cal destacar La ballarina (1890), Vita sexualis (1909), Les oques (1911-1913), Sansho Dayu, un hisendat cruel i llegendari (1915) i Barca del riu Takase (1916). Va traduir Faust de Goethe, Improvisatore de Hans Christian Andersen, Els crims de la rue Morgue d’Edgar Allan Poe, entre d’altres, i va introduir el romanticisme occidental al Japó. Ogai Mori va néixer a l’època d’Edo, quan encara els homes portaven monyo. Va presenciar l’enderrocament de l’ancien régime i el naixement de l’època moderna, i va promoure la renovació de la literatura japonesa, la creació d’una literatura nova a l’estil occidental...
