De los escritores latinos, el comediógrafo Plauto (ca. 254-184 a.C.) es el más antiguo cuya obra completa se nos ha conservado. El presente volumen reúne tres de sus comedias más afortunadas y con mayor repercusión en épocas posteriores. En "Los gemelos" se desarrollan magistralmente los enredos y confusiones a que da lugar el tema de la identidad de dos personajes. "El soldado fanfarrón" (Miles Gloriosus) destaca por el insuperable tratamiento teatral del protagonista, el engreído soldado Pirgopolinices.
