Marco Polo nació y murió en Venecia (1254-1324). En 1271 viajando con su padre y su tío, que eran mercaderes, llegó a China por Armenia, Persia, Jurazán, Pamir y el desierto de Gobi. En 1275, fue recibido en peKín por Kubla Khan, quien lo colmó de honores y le encargó diversas misiones. Dieciséis años más tarde volvió a Europa por Sumatra, las costas meridionales de Asia y el golfo Pérsico. Fue hecho prisionero durante una guerra entre Venecia y Génova. En la prisión genovesa dictó en 1298 al escritor Rustichello El libro de Marco Polo, ciudadano de Venecia, llamado millón (porque siempre hablaba de los ?millones? del gran Khan que gobernaba a ?millones? de súbditos), donde se cuentan las maravillas del mundo. En 1299 volvió a Venecia, donde se ocupó del comercio y de la difusión de su libro.
