Gracias al estudio de estos conceptos comprenderemos el origen y el destino del pensamiento filosófico y científico de Occidente: pensar el logos no supone la vaga evocación de mitos y tradiciones remotos, sino que permite reconstruir la raíz común del conocimiento antes de la división entre las letras y las ciencias.
Es bien sabido que en el Génesis el término griego logos significa "discurso" o "palabra", pero hay un sentido antiguo del logos que permite vincularlo con el concepto de «número». Para recuperarlo, Paolo Zellini rastrea a través de los textos cuán cerca estaban palabra y número en nuestra tradición y nos descubre que el término "logos" aunaba ambos sentidos ya en los versos de Homero, así como en las primeras teogonías, en la tragedia antigua y en la filosofía pitagórica. Asimismo, en las fuentes que atestiguan el origen ritual de las matemáticas, el número tiene un sentido análogo al que luego adquiere el logos en el cristianismo.
