En 1908, Martin Buber es invitado a dar unas conferencias en Praga sobre la esencia y la tarea del judaísmo.
Estos ocho discursos pueden ser considerados como una unidad pues tratan un mismo tema bajo perspectivas distintas: el vuelco y el retorno (Umkehr) a las raíces del judaísmo como forma de renovación del hombre judío, pero también como aportación específica al devenir de la civilización occidental. Suponen en este sentido una aclaración del concepto de judaísmo y una reflexión sobre la religiosidad —diferente de la religión—, entendida por Buber como «sentimiento humano de asombro y veneración, renovado eternamente y siempre expresado de una manera nueva» y «deseo de fundirse en una comunidad con lo incondicional».
Martin Buber // Nacido en 1878 en el seno de una familia judía asimilada de Viena, su abuelo Salomon Buber fue un conocido talmudista y científico. Frente a la visión eminentemente política formulada por Theodor Herzl, Buber se centrará desde un principio en el sentido del judaísmo como realidad existencial.
