En el invierno de 1948, Hortense, una joven maestra jamaicana, desembarca en Southampton para reunirse con Gilbert, su marido, también de Jamaica y también negro. Gilbert ha combatido en la RAF y quiere estudiar Derecho. Ambos soñaban con Londres, el centro del Imperio, y estaban desesperados por abandonar su «pequeña isla».
