Perteneciente a la antigua nobleza, arruinada tras la Revolución Francesa, Philippe-Auguste, conde de VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM (1838-1889), nació en Bretaña, donde creció entre paisajes legendarios de ensoñación y fantasía. Idealista, genial y extravagante, enemigo acérrimo de la falta de criterio artístico de la sociedad burguesa de su tiempo, se relacionó con maestros como Baudelaire, Flaubert y Wagner, y entabló amistad con figuras literarias como Gautier, Leconte de Lisle, Verlaine, Huysmans y su incondicional Mallarmé. Precursor del Simbolismo, intentó en el teatro una renovación escénica integral, aunque la fama y el reconocimiento los obtuvo en 1883 con la publicación de sus célebres Cuentos crueles, en los que confluyen magistralmente la poeticidad y el sarcasmo, el idealismo y la crueldad, características inconfundibles de su creación literaria. VERA Y OTROS CUENTOS CRUELES es la selección que de esta obra ha realizado Luis Alberto de Cuenca, responsable asimismo de su excelente traducción española y de las notas que la acompañan. El prólogo de Alicia Mariño sirve de inmejorable introducción al «cuento cruel» que fue la propia vida de Villiers y a los relatos que contiene el volumen.(*CR*)
