Born in 1915, Hiroshima Kazuo is the last professional basketmaker in the mountainous Hinokage region on the Japanese island of Kyushu.Tea, shiitake mushrooms, and timber are the mainstays of Hinokage's economy, which has always been circumscribed by geography. Rivers and mountain streams once supported a vital fishing industry. Much of the labor of planting, cultivating, and harvesting is still done by hand on steeply terraced slopes; Mr. Hiroshima's baskets are custom-made to accommodate both the tasks and the terrain.
