These traditions, here understood in a broad sense, can be traced back to the very origins of civilisation and have been used on a number of occasions to shape ambitious philosophical, scientific or spiritual ideas. In recent years, numerous artists have shown a new interest in issues as varied as alchemy, secret societies, the esoteric branches of religions, Eastern philosophies, magic and psychedelia, rekindling the fascination with the counterculture of the 1960s and `70s.
