Detalles del libro
Britain's experience of conflict and dissent in the 20th century has been dramatic in its scope and impact. This book draws on the historic archive of the Press Association to recall some of the country's defining moments of revolt and war. The Suffragettes' protests, the hunger marches of the 30s, CND rallies and anti-Vietnam War demonstrations in the 60s all feature, along with more recent shows of national discontent with the poll-tax, the Newbury by-pass and the anti-hunting protests.Britains' race riots of 1981 are chronicled, as are the disturbances during the 30s by Oswald Mosley's fascist rallies through London's East End. The 1926 General Strike is echoed by the Grunwick dispute in the 70s and Wapping in the mid-80s. Decade by decade, the book brings together images from war-time and troubled peace-time: the Great War and World War II, the Falklands, the Gulf War and the Balkans show the continuing presence of conflict in Britain. Unrest in Northern Ireland is highlighted with images from Belfast, Drumcree and Omagh, and from London, Birmingham and Manchester. Pictures of the Birmingham Six, and the Guildford Four underline the part individuals have played.
